The National Authority for Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), has raised concerns about the increasing consumption of alcohol at home.
NACADA raised this concern following the restrictions put in place by the government due to COVID-19 which has led to increased consumption of alcohol in the presence of children. NACADA said this will expose the young ones to alcohol and drug abuse.
The chairperson of the NACADA board of directors said there’s increased online selling of liquor which exposes Kenyan youth to alcohol and drug abuse since they can easily access alcohol through online outlets.
During the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (Idada) 2020, Prof Imbuga some regarding some bars who still allow people to drink in the closed premises. She said this is happening despite the measures the government put in place to help fight coronavirus pandemic.
“Social distancing and use of facemasks and sanitizers are disregarded in these bars [when the liquor takes effect]. To address these COVID-19-related challenges, NACADA is working with the Ministry of Interior and other security and law enforcement agencies to address these Covid-19 related offenses and other alcohol and drug abuse crimes and wish to warn those perpetuating the wrongdoings that the law will catch up with them,” she said.
Prof Imbuga said that the increasing drug abuse is threatening socio-economic development that Kenya struggled to earn.
According to recent surveys conducted by NACADA, the drug abuse problem is growing especially among the Kenyan youth and is interfering with the Country’s socio-economic development progress.
“Online liquor sales have emerged as a big challenge. It is now easy for a youngster to order alcohol in the guise of an adult, from any of the easily available and accessible online suppliers then pick the commodity from anywhere away from their homes,” said Nacada Chief Executive Officer Victor Okioma.
In his speech, Mr. Okioma called for collective action in striving to reduce the increasing alcohol availability to youths through online outlets.
