The rift valley is known for producing top athletes in the world. Big names such as the great Eliud Kipchoge, Wilson Kipsang’, Vivian Cheruyoit, Ezekiel Kemboi just to mention a few. From Kenya’s reputation globally in the world of athletics, one would expect the country to have the best of stadiums, well at least in Africa, after all this is what we are known for. One would expect nothing but the best especially in the rift valley, home to these great athletes but things are different. Today’s focus is on Kamariny stadium in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet county. A stadium which was supposed to be ready years ago as per the Jubilee manifesto.
In 2018, the President and his deputy William Ruto were keen to point out their plan to establish 9 stadiums as part of the great jubilee manifesto. The deputy president assured Kenyans that some of the stadiums will be through in a few months time. Kamariny stadium for example was set to be complete in six months time as per their manifesto. Two years down the line, is there anything to show?
Kamariny stadium trended in 2019 and early 2020 and even in the month of may as Kenyans Pointed out that the stadium set to have been completed was far from being a world class state as promised. In fact, in the pictures shown, it was nothing but a playground looking field. Indeed that was not the initial plan of the government and Kenyans are still in the dark as to what happened along the way.
As things seems to pall apart, there is a glimmer of hope of the residents of iten as the cabinet secretary for sports Amina Mohammed seems to be fixing the patches and gaps left by former sports CS, Rashid Eshesa. Amina has for example inspected various stadiums in Meru and Tharaka nithi county. On her tweeter account, Amina has said that Chuka National stadium in Tharaka Nithi county will be complete by the end of this year.
Kenyans are now appealing to the CS to also pay them a visit and help in the building of Kamariny stadium which has been neglected for years yet it was among the first projects of the government in their manifesto, the appeal comes immediately after following her recent visits to inspect various stadiums.
