Tragedy has struck Lands CS Faridah Karoney following the death of her father in Kapsabet.
Mzee Edward Kiprotich Karoney, 74, was knocked down by a boda boda rider while crossing the busy Kapsabet- Eldoret highway on Tuesday and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Kapsabet County Referral Hospital.
According to State House who confirmed the accident, Mzee Karoney had just parked his vehicle in a shade and was crossing to attend an appointment when a speeding boda boda rider knocked him to the ground.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a message of comfort to the family of Mzee Edward Kiprotich Karoney who passed away in a road accident this evening. Mzee Karoney, 74, was Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney’s father,” announced State House in a statement.
Several politicians, among them Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, went to the hospital to condole with family members.
“We have lost a pillar, a role-model and a tireless servant of the community. Mzee Edward Kiprotich Karoney was a hardworking and progressive man who diligently offered counsel to the society.” wrote Deputy President William Ruto on Twitter.
Nandi county police commander Samson Ole Kinne revealed that the matter is being investigated.
Mzee Karoney was a prominent tea farmer in Kamobo and Kaptel in Nandi.
Farida Karoney was appointed by Uhuru to head the Lands Ministry in 2018 to replace the then CS Jacob Kaimenyi.
Before her appointment to the position, Karoney served as Royal Media Chief Operating Officer.
She previously served as the Group Editorial Director of the same media house. She had also worked in managerial positions at the Nation Media Group and Standard Group Limited.
