Plans are underway by Transport ministry to establish a firm to operate the 64 high-capacity buses imported at a cost of Sh1.6 billion with a sole purpose of easing traffic in Nairobi.
“We are forming a special company to run and manage the buses. All stakeholders will be represented,” CS Macharia said
This project is under Bus Rapid Transport, BRT, system, also called a busway or transitway, is a bus-based public transport system designed to improve capacity and reliability relative to a conventional bus system. In other words BRT is designed to improve a city’s public transport network.
The priority for these BRT will be given to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Likoni, James Gichuru-Rironi and Bomas to Ruiru roads.
Kenya is planning to acquire 64 buses for a start; a half locally assembled and half imported from South Africa.
